Dr. Judith Terstriep ist Wirtschaftswissenschaftlerin, Direktorin des Forschungsschwerpunkts »Innovation, Raum & Kultur« und arbeitet seit 2002 als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut Arbeit und Technik der Westfälischen Hochschule Gelsenkirchen. Im Rahmen ihrer Forschungstätigkeit fokussiert sie das Zusammenspiel von Innovationen, Netzwerken, Wissen und Gesellschaft aus innovations-, management- und raumtheoretischer Perspektive. Arbeitsschwerpunkte bilden u.a. (regionale) Innovations- und Entwicklungsstrategien, die Erfassung und Wirkungsmessung Sozialer Innovationen, gesellschaftliche Innovationsfähigkeit, missionsorientierte und transformative Forschungs- und Innovationpolitik sowie die sozial-ökologische Transformation von Regionen sowie die damit einhergehende Neuaurichtung der Wirtschaftspolitik in Richtung einer sozial-ökologischen Marktwirtschaft. Weitere Forschungsfelder bilden die transformative Wirkung von Clustern & Netzwerken ebenso wie Branchenanalysen und Evaluierungen. Sie lehrt an der Fakultät für Sozialwissenschaften der Ruhr-Universität Bochum zu den Themenfeldern »Regionale Innovationssysteme«, »Soziale Innovationen« und »Migrant Entrepreneurship«. Darüber hinaus verfügt sie über langjährige Erfahrungen in der Koordination und Durchführung europäischer und nationaler Verbundprojekte in der Grundlagen- und angewandten Forschung. Sie wurde von der Europäischen Kommission, Bundesministerien und verschiedenen Stiftungen als Expertin berufen. Dr. Judith Terstriep promovierte zum Thema »Innovation, Wissen, Relationen – Zur Bedeutung von Clustern für die Innovativität von Unternehmen« bei Prof. Dr. Christian Lüthje am Institut für Innovationsmarketing der TU Hamburg-Harburg.

Gender in Management, 39 (8), 1064-1095. https://doi.org/10.1108/GM-08-2023-0300Purpose Given the adversity of the COVID-19 pandemic, there remains an incomplete understanding of the gender disparities in the affectedness and recovery of micro-entrepreneurs from the crisis. Consequently, this paper aims to scrutinise gender disparities in the initial repercussions of the crisis and throughout the recovery phase. Design/methodology/approach Acknowledging the interconnectedness of micro-entrepreneurs’ professional and private spheres, the study adopts a mixed-methods approach combining a representative quantitative study with qualitative data from 36 semi-structured interviews with self-employed individuals in Germany amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Findings The findings indicate a gender gap in the impact and recovery trajectory, particularly affecting female entrepreneurs in caregiving roles beyond immediate financial repercussions. These disparities did not result in more pronounced business measures for recovery but rather involved more experimentation and prosocial behaviours, with a preference for alternatives to state aid, such as personal reserves and social networks. Originality/value Unveiling the dual influence of economic and social factors as essential for female entrepreneurs’ recovery from the crisis adds to the literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of gender-specifics.
