Understanding the nuances of (dis-)connectedness of migrant entrepreneurs within entrepreneurial ecosystems
Berlin International University of Applied Studies

This presentation delves into the complex relationship between migrant entrepreneurs (MEs) and entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs), with a particular focus on how MEs experience (dis-)connectedness within these ecosystems. Drawing on 23 semi-structured interviews conducted with MEs in a German city, the research reveals subtle yet significant intricacies in this dynamic. Contrary to expectations of connectivity, the data surprisingly points to four distinct forms of disconnectedness faced by MEs: entrenched segregation, resource deficits, lack of representation, and alienation.

The study further investigates causal relationships, with discrimination emerging as a fifth factor that perpetuates these aspects of disconnectedness. This exploration enhances theoretical insights by offering a nuanced perspective on the (dis-)connectedness of MEs within EEs, alongside related causal dynamics. The findings underscore the importance of addressing disparities within entrepreneurial ecosystems to foster more inclusive and supportive environments for migrant entrepreneurs and their ventures.
