Being a social subsystem, sport is part of a social dynamic in Germany, which is not only influenced by a general individualisation tendency, but that is also – and particularly – determined by the German unification process. The paper analyses the quantitative development of sporting activities for the years 1986 to 1999. The analysis is mainly based on cross-sectional data of the German Socio Economic Panel (GSOEP).

While the descriptive results first seem to support the individualisation hypothesis as well as an increasing adjustment between West and East Germany, the subsequent multivariate regressions do not confirm these findings. On the one hand, the probability to report sporting activities in Western Germany is still determined by income, age, gender, nationality, and the educational status. On the other hand, there is strong evidence that even one decade after unification unique East German factors affect individuals' sporting participation. Although the estimated model fits very well for the West German situation, it is insufficient to cover the specific factors in East Germany.
