Abstract:

Currently many companies are trying to adapt their business strategy to the image of a modern, service driven company. In fact, it is not only manufacturing industries that are trying to bring product and processes into line with the requirements of the market. Market orientation also has fundamentally changed the principles of business and work organisation in traditional service industries. In the retail trade the increased market orientation has lead to major changes in the organisation of sales work, which, in turn, affect substantially the working conditions of sales staff. In the present report we analyse the consequences of contemporary conditions in sales work on the employment system in the retail trade in general. The report is focussed on corporate strategies in response to retail specific personnel flexibility requirements and their impact on the structure of employment and on working time organisation.
