Abstract:

The documentation represents contributions of the conference “How to establish cooperation within the automobile industry?”, that took place in the Institute for Work and Technology in Gelsenkirchen on 28/29 January 1999. The concepts and strategies for supplier development of DaimlerChrysler Company and BMW Group are described as well as initiatives for a sectoral industrial policy, implemented by the land governments of North-Rhine Westphalia (VIA NRW) and Hessen (MOBIL). The documentation includes results of the study “Innovation and cooperation. Chances of small and medium-sized suppliers in Bavaria”, worked out by the Institute for Social Research (ISF) in Munich parallel to the implementation of the “Bavarian initiative for innovation and cooperation in the automobile supplier industry” (BAIKA). Four cooperation projects show the different approaches for the promotion of interfirm-cooperation. One result of the conference says that – at least at the moment – three circumstances are hampering the emergence of working together as partners: 1. the lack of symmetry of power between OEMs and suppliers; 2. the competition between suppliers; 3. the lack of personnel and time for inter-firm cooperation, with OEMS as well as with suppliers. That is why the activities of externals are assessed to be of crucial importance. What they have to do is to give impetus for cooperation and to relieve the persons involved of certain tasks, which have to be fulfilled within the framework of inter-firm cooperation.
